Preparing the TiVo drive

Reboot the PC, this time using the ozTiVo installer CD to boot from.

Wait for the your PC to finish booting up.

At the Welcome screen just select: Ok

Take note of what the warning screen has to say then if you are happy select: ok
Note: It is advisable to remove all drives you have installed but this is not necessary. I take no responsibility for you overwrite the wrong drive though.

You are now presented with the ozTiVo installer menu:

If you are restoring the ozTiVo image onto the drive that came with your TiVo then you may want to backup the current contents of the drive, not that you can do much with it since it doesn't support PAL but you may still find it useful to have at a later date for whatever reason.

If you want to perform a backup you will need another drive connected to your PC to save the backup image too. Note, the drive to save the backup image too needs to be a FAT or FAT32 partition, NTFS drives are not supported for writing too.

The "Hinsdale How-to TiVo upgrade" (http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/index9.html) is a great guide that explains exactly how to perform a backup of your drive. You do not require the "Mfs Tools Boot CD" that they list as all the necessary tools are already available on the ozTiVo image.

To perform the necessary backup steps from the "Hinsdale How-to" you will need to enter the bash command prompt, to do this select "Exit this program" from the ozTiVo installer menu as per the screen below. You can return to the installer at any time simply by typing "exit" at the bash prompt.

From the ozTiVo menu, select "Set the TiVo disk"

This will display the available drives you can restore the TiVo image to. If you disconnected all other drives there will only be one drive available to select. If you have more than one drive you need to select the TiVo drive based on its device name as explained in the Initial Setup: Determine drive device name ... step.

Select the drive device name you wish to restore the ozTiVo image too.

If you have more than one drive connected you will now be presented with the option of adding a second drive, for your TiVo. Unless you are planning on installing two drives in your TiVo just select "Single_Disk_Only" and press OK.

The following screen will now be displayed, just select: OK

Now back at the main ozTiVo menu, select "Restore the image" from the menu.

The following screen will be displayed asking you which image you wish to restore onto your drive. There should only be one image so just select: OK

The next screen asks you how big a swap partition you wish to use, unless you are using a drive greater than 274GB just select OK. If you are using a bigger drive enter in 256.

The warning screen will now be displayed asking you to confirm you have selected the correct drive, if you are happy that you have then select: yes

The TiVo image restore will then take place as per the following screen:

Followed by the screen indicating success or failure of the restore, select: OK

You should now be back at the main menu, select "Perform network configuration".

You will now need to choose what sort of network connection you will be making to retrieve the guide data. The default would be to use the standard internal modem which comes with all TiVo's. If you have purchased and installed a TiVo network card then select the network card type your purchased from the menu (the TiVo requires specialized network cards, see Tivo Network Cards for a list). There is also a specialized Serial Cable for connecting your TiVo to your PC and if you have such a cable then you can select that option (see Serial Connection for more details on the serial cable and how to connect to the emulator via your PC). Network: Modem

Once you select modem setup you will get the below warning. Modem setup has been confirmed to work in South Africa so you may continue, if you do experience problems then you ‘’’may’’’ have a faulty modem and will need to look at one of the other options as a workaround.

You will now be presented with the screen to enter in you ISPs' (Internet Service Provider) details. Your standard internet account settings will be used for this and the next couple of steps. If you know your ISPs' pop (dial-in) number enter it here, if you are unsure you will most likely be able to use "0860007249" as this is the SAIX dial-in number and will work for most ISPs'.

Enter in your internet account username, then select: OK

Enter in your internet account password, then select: OK

A confirmation that the changes have been made is now displayed, just select: OK

The next screen shows the line that will be added with your specific internet account settings, just select: Exit

You will now be returned to the ozTiVo installer main menu

Network: Turbonet / CacheCard / AirNet / TivoNet

The below screens will be pretty much the same if using a Turbonet, CacheCard, AirNet or TivoNet as your network card. If you are using one of these network cards, select the version you have from the Menu. Note: If you have a Terbonet or X-Factor network card you need to select Turbonet as they use the same drivers and setup procedure.

If you have direct internet access by way of a router, etc then the TiVo will be able to access the guide data directly without needing to talk to your PC. If your internet access is only available through your PC you need to enable Internet Connection Sharing for your TiVo to access the guide data.

You are now presented with a screen to enter in a static IP or use an IP provided for by your DHCP server.

DHCP: If you are using a router that should provide a DHCP address for the TiVo and you can leave the entry blank. DHCP is the best & easiest option especially if you can configure your router to provide a static IP address based on a MAC address (which will be displayed in one of the upcoming screens). To determine the IP address assigned to your TiVo once it has booted up, from the Tivo Menu select Messages & Setup then TiVo Messages
Static IP: To use a static IP address just enter in a valid, unused address within your subnet. An easy way to determine a valid address when using windows is as follows:

• Click Start, then Run, enter in "cmd" and press enter.
• A DOS window will open allowing you to execute commands.
• type: ipconfig
• You current IP address will be displayed, the TiVo address you choose to use will be the same as you current IP address except for the number after the last period (i.e. "81" in the below example).
• You can choose any number between 1 and 254 as a replacement but we need to test that it is not already in use. To do this still in your DOS window, ping your chosen IP address. e.g. assuming you chose to use "155" and your current IP address is "192.168.0.81" your new ip address would be "192.168.0.155".
• To test this is not already is use, in your dos window, type: ping 192.168.0.155
• If you get "Request timed out" then you should be fine.
• If you get "Reply from 192.168.0.155: bytes ..." then you need to select a new ip address as the address you entered is already in use. Below is an example of the above Static IP testing in a DOS window:

A screen will then display indicating whether you choose a static or DHPC address.

The next screen will allow you to customize your MAC address, you can leave this as is as it only requires changing when using multiple TiVo's on your local network. Just select: OK

You will now be able to customize your subnet, unless you know what you are doing and have a reason to change it don't, just select: OK

The next screen will allow you to enter in a gateway address, if you have a router enter in the IP address of your router. If you are connecting through a PC then enter the IP address of your PC.

The next 3 screen will only be displayed if using an Airnet card!

Airnet Only: Enter in the ssid you will be connecting to.

Airnet Only: Select the encryption method you use on your wireless network.

Airnet Only: If you selected an encryption method above other then none you will now need to enter in you WEP key then select OK.

A confirmation screen will now be displayed, just select: OK

The next screen shows the changes that have been made for your configuration, select: Ok

You will now be returned to the ozTiVo installer main menu

Network: Serial / PPPonDSS

If you are connecting to your PC via the specialized serial cable for your TiVo, you can select either "PPP on the Serial Port" or "Bash on the Serial Port", depending on how you plan to share your network connection from your PC. The Serial Connection page has more information about these options as well as what need to be setup on your PC for a serial connection to work.

Either way you will be present with a screen as below, just select: OK

You will now be returned to the ozTiVo installer main menu

If you are planning on transferring some of your recorded shows to DVD then its a good idea to perform this option, it will make the TiVo record in the standard 720 pixel resolution as used by DVD's instead of the 544 pixels as per TiVo default. Note: On some TV's setting the recoding resolution to 720 pixels can introduce a slight flicker to the picture, if you find this is the case on your TV then restoring the settings back to 544 should solve the problem.

Select "Set PAL tuner type" from the menu.

You will then be presented with a text based menu, select "Other settings", type 4 and press enter.


Then select "Horizontal Resolution", type 1 and press enter.


You want to use a resolution of "720 pixels", so type 3 and press enter.


You are done, so select "Return to main menu", type 4 and press enter.


You need to save your setting, select "Save settings and exit", type 5 and press enter.


You will now be returned to the ozTiVo installer main menu

You are now done making the necessary changes to your TiVo drive and you can reinstall the drive back into your TiVo machine as per the guide you followed in the step “Mounting the drive� during the Initial Setup.

Now that you are done with all the “hard� stuff you can connect your TiVo to your TV as well as to either DSTV, M-Net or a VCR. This is done the same way as you would connect a normal VCR, you must however use the RCA cables (Yellow, Red & White cables) unless you have modified the TiVo tuner which is still NTSC only. As an example: the DSTV connects to the TiVo RCA input, the TiVo RCA output connects to the TV or AMP input. Once that is done you can begin the "Guided Setup� by following the TiVo screens displayed on your TV.
