Although the TiVo transmits IR signals out the front using the IR transmitter cable produces much better results due to it having a direct line of sight and not relying on a bounced off signal. If your channels sometimes don't change correctly then you may need to reposition your IR transmitter. For DSTV its best to have the IR transmitter above the channel display with the LED about 2cm in front.

If you did not receive an IR transmitter with your TiVo then it is recommended to purchase one for better channel changing.
