Internet Connection Sharing

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) under Windows allows a single computer with an Internet Connection (e.g. a dial-up connection to an ISP) to share the connection with other IP devices (such as your TiVo) on the Ethernet network. Both your PC and your Tivo will require a network card.

PC instructions: Setting up Internet Connection Sharing (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics)

Once that is done:

  • Connect the Tivo to the PC via a hub, switch or cross-over cable
  • Boot the Tivo after ICS is configured, which will result in ICS assigning an IP address via DHCP
  • That's it, the TiVo now thinks it is connected to the Internet

To view the IP address assigned, type ipconfig /displaydns at a Command Prompt.

Alternatively if you have only one box connected with ICS you can type ping 192.168.0.255 and the Tivo will respond to the ping with its IP address.

Note: If you are running XP service pack 2 then the default XP firewall will stop this ping command working. You can get around it by temporarily disabling the firewall on your LAN connection, running the ping, and then enabling the firewall again. Right mouse click on the LAN connection in Control Panel/Network Connections select properties and got to Advanced and select firewall settings.
